The first 100 % plastic potable water pipe for contaminated soil

Soil contamination comes from a variety of sources. Landfill areas can contain any number of toxic chemicals, service station sites are often contaminated by fuels and oils, industrial areas polluted by various hydrocarbons etc. Many of the substances found in contaminated soil permeate standard polyethylene potable water pipes, as does the methane commonly found in marshy but otherwise uncontaminated areas. All can cause water contamination.

Installing piping for potable water safely through contaminated soil is problematic. Standard polyethylene pipes are permeable to many chemicals found at contaminated sites in urban areas. Conventional barrier pipes aren’t, but mixed-material solutions has issues, both environmental and in terms of corrosion. For instance, Trichloroethylene (TCE) degrades conventional barrier pipes over time. In effect: solving one problem may create others.

Barrier PLUS is the first 100% Barrier Pipe solution in the market. The system will be sold by our organisations in Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

    • The development of Barrier PLUS was initiated by some of our customers. The main driver was immediate concerns about the durability of aluminium barrier pipes in the presence of TCE. To solve the problem, Uponor engineers turned to a non-permeable polymer, approved for foodstuffs applications and also widely used in fuel containers. The resulting multi-layer potable water pipe has been carefully tested by an international test institute and the result is a potable water pipe that does the job in contaminated soil, is resistant to degradation from TCE and can be easily and completely recycled. Barrier PLUS allows you to build with confidence in contaminated soil. Which in turn builds confidence in the people that rely on you to provide clean drinking water.
    • Barrier PLUS pipes are available in dimensions ranging from 32 to 250 mm. The smaller pipes are delivered on coils, while diameters above 160 mm come in 6 or 12 m lengths. The system is compatible with standard piping and uses standard fittings. Like conventional barrier pipes, all joints must be welded according to special regulations and then sealed with tape

Preserving its quality and suitability for drinking is a great responsibility and calls for the use of the best materials for the job.Our choice is a polymer which is widely used in the food packaging industry. It’s weather resistant, resistant to oil and solvents, flexible, mouldable and of course, recyclable. Moreover, it’s an excellent hydrocarbon barrier, making it a perfect choice for barrier pipes, from both the water safety as well as the sustainability viewpoint.
